The Ultradeck will never be my personal first choice of turntable, but it’s perfectly competent. Moving the arm into position to start a side feels well controlled. Mechanically, the turntable and its components were very quiet - no motor noise, no spindle bearing noise or high frequency power supply oscillation. As usual when cartridges are set up properly and when the turntable platter is dead level and the cartridge connection to the preamp and system is dead quiet, the MoFi Ultradeck worked extremely well. I used an iPhono2, Lehmann Black Cube SEII and a Pro-ject Phono Box RS/Power Box RS. I auditioned the Ultradeck at home in December last year with the MoFi cartridge and with a Nagaoka MP-500, Acoustical Systems Fideles, Ortofon Quintet Mono, and a Charisma DL-103. The MoFi tonearm design is a bit of an antique in some respects, as another SHF member already noted. But the versatility of Rega tonearms has been widely recognized for decades. Rigid shims are sometimes needed, depending on the height of the non-Rega cartridge. The main installation requirement when using a Rega arm is always a VTA measurement that starts with a small headshell level. But Rega 3xx and 8xx tonearms work brilliantly well with most of the low, medium and high compliance cartridges on the market today. Rega cartridges are designed to perfectly fit Rega tonearms mounted on Rega turntables no adjustment needed. Quoting from Q+A reply by MusicDirect rep:Ĭlick to expand. The MoFi arm is nothing at all like the Rega 3xx tonearms in terms of versatility or compliance. I'm really glad MoFi is not in pharmaceuticals:a 10 milligram deviation there can be fatal - here, they're not shy about a 10 gram deviation. Do you see any issues here? Can you imagine any other tonearm with the effective mass spec swinging that wildly - to the magnitude of 10? An average Jelco is around 12.5 gr effective mass, and I can hardly imagine a situation where a reply from them would say "slightly above 10", and a reply from their dealer saying "oh, it says 12.5, but it's actually 2.5". So, the listed spec is 35 gr, the reply one member here got from MoFi themselves is "slightly above 30", and the reply in MD's Q+A session is 25.14. How do we know it doesn't breach the range either way, with some going to 25, others to 40? If I can't believe Nagaoka specs, can I believe MoFi?" "The effective mass is 25.14." - then why, for Fox's sake, if this info is known, would MoFi not change it in their spec sheet? Or why MD won't add a disclaimer of their own, to avoid confusing people?Īnd now I quote myself, from this thread: "Yeah, but this one isn't known "exactly" - is it? We "know" it to be somewhere between "slightly above 30" and 35. One caveat, regardless of the manufacturer, unplug the stupid thing before you jack with the VTF.Ĭlick to expand.Quoting from Q+A reply by MusicDirect rep:

I also want to state emphatically that I love my UltraDeck and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for great turntable. They were quick to respond and very kind. In fairness, I hope Mofi doesn't mind me quoting them here. You want to avoid any cartridges that are specified as high compliance but the majority of today’s cartridges are either medium or low compliance and will work great with your turntable." We have mounted many cartridges from Ortofon, Grado, Hana, Audio Technica, Denon, and others that work great with both of our turntables. "As for the effective mass, it is lower than 35g, but this is still a topic that is overstated and misunderstood. Through Music Direct, the prices are as follows: MasterTracker $639, UltraTracker $399 and StudioTracker $159.Īnyways.assuming that I would be looking at cheaper alternatives to the MasterTracker, I asked about the tonearm effective mass "typo" controversy of 35g. Today I contacted Mofi about trade-in cost on a damaged MasterTracker, (bent cantilever.spare me some shame and don't ask).
